In 1838 More than 15,000 Cherokee Indians were forced to march from Georgia to Oklahoma Indian Territory. Approximately 4,000 died from starvation and disease along the “Trail of Tears.” A founder of the Democratic Party.

Martin Van Buren was State Senator and Attorney General. Martin Van Buren was then governor of New York (1828–1829) but resigned to become Jackson's secretary of state. In 1832, Van Buren became vice president and in 1836 became President. He supported the anti-slavery Democrats.
