  • Fact 4 - The Chinook were a tribe of hunter fishers and traders. Men were in charge of trading, hunting for food and protecting the camp and the women were in charge of the home and land
  • Fact 5 - Homes and Houses: Plankhouses: These were permanent houses built as homes by static fishing tribes of the Northwest Coast, such as the Chinooks.
  • Fact 6 - Plank houses are made of long, flat planks of cedar wood lashed to a wooden frame and made good houses for people in cold climates who lived in areas with lots of tall trees.

  • Fact 7 - The name of a famous Chinook leader was Chief Tumulth who signed the treaty that created the Grand Ronde Reservation
  • Fact 8 - Clothing for men: Men wore breechcloths which were made from a long rectangular piece of animal skin or cloth which was worn between the legs and tucked over a belt, so that the flaps of the breechcloth covered the front and behind. The legs  and chest were bare.
  • Fact 9 - Clothing: Tule rush Cloaks or blankets were worn in cold weather. Women wore skirts made from grass and cedar bark
  • Fact 10 - Shoes and footwear: Moccasins were made of soft leather or deerskin and sewn together with deer sinew. Moccasins were a soft slip on shoe, or slipper, consist of a sole and sides made of one piece of leather, stitched together at the top and were a light beige color.

  • Fact 12 - The Chinook Indians used cedar-bark or dugout canoes
  • Fact 13 - Women's Hair: Hair was kept long
  • Fact 14 - Jewelry: Women wore bead necklaces
  • Fact 15 - Face paint / War Paint: Men wore bright face paint in times of war. Tribal tattoos were also used to decorate their faces and bodies
