  • Fact 1 - Definition: The Gorilla is the largest anthropoid Apes (having shape or appearance of a human being). It is terrestrial and vegetarian inhabiting the forests of central west Africa. Gorillas are covered with brownish hair on most of their body

  • Fact 2 - Gorillas are part of the great ape family and the largest of the living primates. There are four types of apes include: Gorillas, Gibbons Chimpanzees, Bonobos and  Orangutans.
  • Fact 3 - They are extremely intelligent and are able to make use of a variety of tools
  • Fact 4 - They are ground-dwelling and predominantly herbivorous, feeding only on plants. Gorillas live in small groups (or bands) of 6-7 including one silverback, a few females and their young
  • Fact 5 - The word "gorilla" comes from the history of Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian explorer who encountered "a savage people, the greater part of whom were women, whose bodies were hairy, and who our interpreters called Gorillae"

Western Lowland Gorillas

  • Fact 6 - There are 3 species of gorilla - Eastern Lowland Gorillas, Western Lowland Gorillas and Mountain gorillas

    • The Western lowland gorilla, is found at low altitudes in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo, and Equatorial Guinea

    • The Eastern lowland gorilla, is found in eastern Zaire
    • The Mountain gorilla, is found at high altitudes in Zaire, Rwanda and Uganda
  • Fact 7 - Eastern Lowland Gorillas, Western Lowland Gorillas and Mountain gorillas are all classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Endangered Species
  • Fact 8 - classification 'Endangered' (Status: Threatened) -  In the immediate probability of becoming extinct and require protection to exist. Gorillas are threatened by poaching, loss of habitat, and disease
  • Fact 9 - Lowland gorillas feed mainly on fruit while Mountain gorillas feed mostly on herbs, stems and roots. The Mountain Gorilla inhabits the cloud forests of the Virunga Volcanoes. Lowland Gorillas live in dense forests and lowland swamps and marshes
  • Fact 10 - Gorilla standing height: 1.65–1.75 metres (5 ft 5 in–5 ft 9 in)

  • Fact 11 - Gorilla weight: 140–200 kg (310–440 lb)
  • Fact 12 - A silverback is an adult male gorilla more than 12 years of age with a distinctive patch of silver hair on his back
  • Fact 13 - A blackback is a male gorilla under 12 years of age
  • Fact 14 - Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking (as do chimpanzees)
  • Fact 15 - They have approximately 3 offspring in their lifetime
