  • Facts about the History of Nevada History - 1500 / 1600's Native Americans of Nevada

    • The Native Indians of Nevada were the were the Koso, Paiute, Panamint, Pueblo, Shoshoni and Ute tribes

    • First explored by the Spanish

    • 1540 - Alta California was explored and claimed for Spain in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo ( -1543)

    • 1568 - Bernal Diaz del Castillo, also known as Bernal Diaz, (1492-1584) published the 'True History of the Conquest of New Spain'

    • 1609 - Town of Santa Fe established as Spanish-Indian trade centre

    • 1756 - 1763 - The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for Cuba.

    • 1775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies

    • July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence

    • July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces

    • September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain

    • The Native Indians of Nevada were the were the Koso, Paiute, Panamint, Pueblo, Shoshoni and Ute tribes

    • 1826 - Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) leads expedition to Meadow Valley Wash, Nevada

    • 1828 - Peter Skene Ogden (1794-1854) working for the Hudson's Bay Company led five trapping expeditions to the "Snake Country" between 1828-1829. He discovered Humboldt River

    • 1833-44 Various explorers explore Nevada including Joseph Walker, Captain John C. Frémont and Stevens and Townsend

    • 1843 - The First wagon trains led by Joseph Walker cross the Sierra

    • 1847 - Mormons move to Salt Lake Valley

    • 1848 - United States acquired Nevada in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    • 1849 - Captain Hunt leads the first wagon train, The Jayhawkers, to California via the Mormon Trail. The high death tole lead to the name of "Death Valley"

    • 1851 - July - gold was discovered in Gold Canyon, near Dalton

    • 1855 - The Mormon leader Brigham Young sends a group to establish a mission for the Latter-day Saints Church

    • 1855 - Battle with the Native Indians lead by Major William M. Ormsby

    • 1861 - The region achieves territorial status, separating from Utah

    • 1863 - Western Shoshone Indians sign treaty of Ruby Valley, signed by Te-Moak

    • 1861 - 1865 The American Civil War. In 1859 John Brown raided Harpers Ferry and set in
      motion events that led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, a
      known opponent of slavery, was elected president and in 1861 the South Secedes. The
      initial Secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of Mississippi, Florida,
      Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
      These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America. The
      bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War.
      The surrender of Robert E. Lee on April 9 1865 signalled the end of the Confederacy

    • 1864 - Nevada becomes the 36th state

    • 1865 December 6 - The Abolishment of Slavery. The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S Constitution is ratified, thus officially abolishing slavery

    • 1880 - Chief Winnemucca died. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca writes the book "Life among the Piutes" and establishee Nevada's first school for Indians

    • 1898-1901 The Spanish American War. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris the US annexes Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines.

  • Origin of the name - The beautiful mountain ranges of California were called Sierra Nevada (snowy range) by Spanish sailors. The name of this new territory was shortened to Nevada and named accordingly in 1859
